I have always been fascinated with learning. I was blessed with a great memory and the ability to learn things easily; so education became a natural outlet for me, more specifically, science and mathematics. My commitment to further developing my understanding of the world I live in has been my motivation to succeed and excel. A solid work ethic has also opened many doors for me.

Why did you choose to attend Bowie State University?
As cliché as this may sound, I never chose Bowie, Bowie chose me. I attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. At a college fair, I went to the booths of the various schools I wanted to attend. This will forever standout in my memory; I walked past the Bowie booth and the recruiter nearly chased me down the hall. I had no interest in applying to Bowie, but he told me, “You never know, this could change your life.” So, I filled out the application and thought nothing of it. A couple of months later, Bowie sent me an invitation to join its Honors Program with a full scholarship. The distance from home, coupled with a free education sealed the deal for me; I have never questioned that decision.

What professor/s has had the most impact on you and why?
Dr. Monika Gross, the director of the Honors Program without a doubt, has had the most impact on my college career. She is basically a surrogate mother offering guidance, assistance, and discipline when needed. She also pushed for me to exceed and has never been satisfied with mediocrity.

Dr. M. Sammye Miller – for the same reasons.

I work under Dr. Alan Anderson in his research lab. The training I have received has helped to make me more competitive in my field of study. He basically went out on a limb for me because he didn’t know me, but he heard of the things I had done around campus. He is also my mentor.

Dr. Tamara Tatum-Broughton was my first college professor and ironically, I was one of her very first students. I’ve taken Dr. Tatum for three courses and her style of teaching really helped me when I took the PCAT.

Dr. Deborah Rayfield, Dr. Ude, Dr.Gittis and Dr. Braden were also instrumental in my success.

Explain how Bowie State has helped to enhance your cultural experiences.
Going to an HBCU has enhanced my understanding of my heritage. It has been a privilege to be mentored by African American scholars who have climbed to the higher echelons of academia.

Do you plan to attend graduate school?
I will be attending Howard University’s School of Pharmacy in the fall.
